Week 4

Event #4 - 10/21/2023

Bourbon Batch (and a taste of old Germany)

This week's event focused on the American drink, Bourbon, but it was also October so a little Bavarian Octoberfest occured.

Did you know Bourbon is named for Bourbon County Virginia (err... Kentucky)?

"Governor" Thomas Jefferson (of Virginia) allocated 60 acres of land to any Pennsylvania immigrant who agreed to plant corn on their land in the western Virginia territories.  As a Francophile, Jefferson named the settled area after the French Bourbon dynasty.  Later, this portion of Virginia would be a part of the annexation that became Kentucky.

So I ask, what's more American than a drink that was created by Pennsylvania entrepreneurs' whose anger over egregious taxation from the Federal Government, moved south in order to take advantage of policy enacted by none other than Thomas Jefferson and his plan to increase native corn exports, which in turn could be easily fermented?

Oh and... Prost!
